On September 2003, the classes from 20 classes to 100 classes, and the students from 100 to 500 peoples, then the senior management of school accord the statics, they decide apply the government funding for improve the teaching quality and operational performance, wish can upgrade the school image.

On May 2004, the senior management received around $150000 government funding for purchase ICT equipment and improve the teaching / learning environment.

On current environment, all students only submit paper assignment and examination. The

assignment and examination can’t keep long time, easy to damage and dirty. When these assignment damaged, the students must do it again, and the students sometime forget submit the assignment to administration of school, then the assignment will be fail. In addition, when teacher assigned project or coursework, but the school have not ICT equipment and internet service, then they search the information for the project is very different. After the ICT equipment implementation, all students can write the assignment and do examination by personal computer, when they change the word on the assignment is very easy, they only use the input device (e.g., keyboard…etc), they can change the words at once. In addition, when the school assigned the project to students, they can search the information for project through internet service. For example, the project topic is supermarket, they can search the supermarket definition, information and the stock prices. When students completed the project, they can print out the documentation through the printer.

The project environment is on city, the school ICT project purchase around 10 computers, 4 printers and 1 of Management and Administration System. They use system base on windows 2008 and windows 7, and the senior management minimum requirement is access to internet for search new information for school program and print out the assignment. The project implementation is smooth, but I suggest client implement the firewall and anti-virus for corporate company version, because the project is not include network and computer security deceive or tools. The network implementations include cable implementation, switching implementation and WAN link implementation.

We are according the school floor plan implement the cabling first, because all local network purpose, must use network cable access to all switch, personal computer and server. Second, we implement the switch for linkup all ICT equipment and WAN link, and last we implement the WAN link with ISP (Internet Service Provider), then the local network completed configuration and when the personal computer plug the network cable, then user can use the internet service.

The e-Class system is based on Oracle and SQL Server platform development, so we need accord the government funding choice the database implementation, they received the government funding around 150000, so we will implement Oracle database on server.

The Oracle Database is OO database, the database structure use relational data model, that’s mean the database will slot the data according rules, then the database will combine to data display on the monitor.

Wait the Windows auto run the setup procedure, the process around 15 minutes.

When Windows popup the restart windows, then press “Restart Windows” button

When the windows after the reboot, then the windows will popup change the “administrator” password.

Completed Step 8, then update all windows service pack and security hotfix

When the windows updated the latest sevice pack and hotfix, then we enable the server feature – IIS and file and printing sharing service.

Completed Oracle pre-set procedure, then we insert the Oracle 11g to implementation

Press “Next” and Change the default install path from “C:Program Files” to “C:Oracle”, then press “Next”

Select the “Enterprise Mode” and press “Next”

Select the “Custom” and press “Next”

Point to Database driver and connecter only enable “Microsoft SQL Server”, “Oracle” and “Microsoft Access”, then press “Next”

Wait the Oracle Database completed installation procedure, the procedure complete time around 30 minutes.

Press “Next” button and complete the installation

Select to windows button -> all programs -> Oracle 11g Database -> start the database first page.

(If we can access the page, the installation successful, otherwise, we need foud out the problem)

Last, we need type the IP Address and subnet on network adapter, and we use test the network connection by ping……etc.

Third Step – Personal Computer Implementation

When we completed second step and the senior management signed the stage complete form. We implement the personal computer on local network. The personal computer will deploy windows, Oracle client, network printer, Office Application and e-Class client. When we completed the personal computer implementation, then the computer can provide access to internet service and get network resources.

The following as the personal computer operating system, Office Application and database client procedure,

Switch on the Computer, then the computer will popup the windows pre-set explorer.

Select “Accept” the license and press “Next”

Type the Computer Name on “Origination” textbox, then press “Next”

Change the Computer Name and type the local administrator password.

Select the location “Hong Kong” and press “Next”

Select all default setting and press “Complete”

Restart the computer and login to windows as “administrator”

Update all windows service pack and security hotfix

Completed windows update, then we type the IP address and Subnet on network adepter

Insert the Microsoft Office 2003 to computer

Press “Next” and type the Office 2007 license key, then press “Next”

Select the “custom” and press “Next”

Select “Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook” install on local drive and press “Next”

Wait the setup procedure complete, then press the “Complete” button.

Completed Microsoft Office procedure, then start the Oracle client procedure.

Insert the Oracle database disk to computer and press “Next”

Select “Accept” license and press “Next”

Select the “Client Only” and press “Next”

Wait the Oracle setup auto process completed

Press “Completed”

Select the Windows button and click “Control Panel”

Click to “ODBC” and Add the “Oracle Driver”

Type the server IP Address and login account for login to database

Test the connection

Fourth Step – Network Printer Implementation

Completed the Step 1 to Step 3, then we implement the network printer, The network laser printer need enable the network module function and IP address. After the network laser printer configurations, then we implement the printer driver on local drive, the drive must include IP Address and send data to printer port number.

Base on the ICT implement project, the security configuration is excluded, because the costing maybe over around 20 – 30% budget, then the ICT equipment implementation project delays around 2 month, so this is optional in this moment.

I approach the school implement the firewall and antivirus server, because the firewall can block the unknown network packet and internet ports control, it can disable un-use port for other network service, for example, port 21 for FTP server, port 22 for ssh, port 23 for telnet service…………etc., the hacker always entry to internal network data through these network ports. In addition, I recommend all computers implement the anti-virus for protect the operating system and data, because when the computer download and implement the virus file, it will make the computer very slow, and capture the confidential data automatically to send out to hacker. In the worst case, the computer missed the file, but we can’t find the reason, so I recommend implement the firewall and antivirus for computer edition.

On system side, I recommend setup the backup for server data, when the server hard disk damaged, then we can restore the latest data through the backup solution, then I recommend apply the Symantec backup solution, the backup software interface is user friendly, the teaching staff is easy to control the backup schedule and definition. This recommendation is optional. The senior management of school base on the budget include to budget or not. The solution total price is around 50000 – 60000 (Include the Storage & Autoloader).

For example, Staff man power, daily operation performance, data, learning quality, school image……….etc. When we completed the implementation project, administration staff and teaching staff easy to update the general information through computer, for example, current environment, administration staffs update the student resident address, they need manually search the information folder, after the search, then they change to the address on the concern student information form. This operation always use around half day to complete the task, but we completed the personal computer and application implementation, then they manually to input the information to Microsoft spared sheet through the Microsoft Excel one time. When they want to update student personal information, then they open the document, and use search function found out the student row for change the student information. That does can improve the daily operation performance. In addition, the school can change the work flow model to personal computer that means is the administration staff filing operation, update the information, and copy the learning material for student. These operation only 1 or 2 staffs to complete, no need to add the head count for assist the administration staff and the manpower for assist their daily operation, that the school can save around 20% administrative expenditure. In the project, we planned implement the file and database server on the local network, the file server can public the share folder for the teaching staff and administration staffs to keep the general or confidential data, and the user through the school administration and management system to add the student information on database. These feature can keep around 4 – 5 years data, but the server real keep how long data of the school depend on the hard disk size in the server, for example, the server implemented 320 GB hard disk, accord the word file format to calculate the quantity, we think the server can keep around 4 years, but the data is graphic or presentation material, then the quantity maybe only around 3 – 3.5 years. In addition, the current environment, they can keep around 2 years and search the concern data different. In fact, the computer keep data is rather than paper information folder.

We are according the risk identification list, we have a solution to reduce the risk level, the risk solution is found 2 or above vendor for purchase IT equipment and we need double confirm the deliver equipment schedule, then the risk 2, we will confirm the temporary purchasing order or confirm the purchasing order and fax to the vendor sales department, and then we process the purchasing procedure as soon as possible. The risk 3, we will arrange enough human resources on site to start the project, but the team member resigned, we will assign other people with concern technical to counties the project. Final, the risk 4, we will request the delivery date early for our engineer to test the hardware and software performance, when the hardware unstable, we will call the vendor re-delivery the equipment at once.
